London to Isle of Skye

How to get from London to the Isle of Skye.

There are many options on how to travel from London to the Isle of Skye. It depends on how much time you have and what you want to see and do.

If you only have a short time and want to get to the island to see the key tourist places such as the Old Man of Storr or the amazing Fair Pools, then there are options for you. From London you can fly directly to Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands.

From Inverness you have the following options;

Hire a car and drive to the Isle of Skye.

Hiring a car is for the more confident driver. The roads in the far north of Scotland and on Skye are best described as challenging.

There are many single-track roads. When you drive them it’s likely you will convince yourself that the roads operate in a one-way system. Untrue – cars, lorry’s and buses will approach you from an opposite direction. Single track roads have passing places at intervals alternating from the right to left side. The car closest to the one on their side, gives way to the on coming vehicle. It can get a little confusing, but if everyone takes their time, it always works out in the end.

Public transport from Inverness to Skye

Buses depart from Inverness on a regular basis. The journey takes 4 hours. The scenery from Inverness on this journey is absolutely wonderful. The final destination being Portree,  also the largest town on Skye. The main downside of taking the public bus is that you cannot jump off and on for photo stops or take the opportunity to enjoy lunch at a local pub.

Also worth considering is that famous island locations such as the Quiraing or the Fairy Glen are not on the public bus route and will not be accessible to you.

For timetables – Citylink
