A few years back, my wife Louise and I welcomed our first son Harris, and everything changed. We quickly realised we didn’t want to leave Harris in childcare to return to our demanding careers at Coca Cola and Standard Life. It was the pivotal decision that would create Heartland Travel.
The search was on for a livelihood that made us happy and would provide better work-life balance for our growing family. A visit to Doune Castle one weekend gave us our answer. Louise spotted a tour bus in the car park and floated the idea that running our own tour company might just work for us too. We spoke to the driver, put in some research at home, and discovered a promising gap in the market.
My first 16-seater tour bus came pre-loved from another tour company and was soon put to work doing short tours of Stirling. It wasn’t long before we added our signature tour of the Highlands, Skye and Loch Ness. Louise delivers the backstage detail, while I drive, revealing Scotland with a passion that you’ll hear echoed back in all our reviews. From finding snow for those who’ve never seen it, to scallop fishing with local fishermen, I’ve given scores of clients some once-in-a-lifetime memories.

For the past two decades, I’ve been a tour guide, regaling tourists with tales of Scotland’s beauty – turns out, folks love hearing about standing stones more than sedimentary rocks. Before that, I earned a degree in Environmental Geology from St Andrews, mostly so I could tell people I went there. When I’m not hiking through the Highlands, I’m usually lost in a good tune – indie rock, folk, you name it. Though I draw the line at improvised jazz. I’ve had stone-hugging hippies from Italy on one tour, and Russian mafia on another. It’s never boring, that’s for sure.
